SECOND SYMPOSIUM OF THE WEST AFRICA INTERPORE CHAPTER

Special Topic: Clay applications, Mining waste management in Africa

The West Africa InterPore Chapter (WAIC), a national chapter of the International Society for Porous Media (InterPore), was founded in October 2022 by researchers from West African countries. The aims of the chapter are to connect West African scientists, engineers, and lecturers working in the field of porous media with each other and with the InterPore community; help improve the international visibility of West Africans in the field of porous media and promote the mobility of young researchers as it pertains to international conferences or research-exchange programmes.

For its second edition of its annual meeting, WAIC invites researchers and industry professionals to submit abstracts for the upcoming symposium. This symposium aims to address the pressing challenges associated with clay applications, mining activities in Africa, particularly the critical issue of mining waste management.
Porous media research and engineering offer valuable solutions to tackle these challenges. By studying the behavior of fluids and contaminants in porous materials, researchers can contribute to developing innovative waste management strategies and valuable applications of clay for emerging environment management technologies in the context of climate change and scarcity of clean drinking water. This includes the design of effective containment systems, the development of pollutant capture and treatment methods, and the optimization of porous media for filtration and remediation processes.
This symposium aims to foster interdisciplinary discussions and collaborations among researchers, engineers, and industry stakeholders to explore the latest advancements and potential applications of porous media science and engineering in the context of mining waste management.

We welcome abstracts that address topics such as:

- Porous media characterization
- Transport phenomena
- Multiphysics-multiphase flow modelling
- Contaminant transport analysis
- Clay applications
- Waste containment and remediation strategies
- Sustainable mining practices
- Social and environmental impacts of mining activities
- Process engineering
- Soil mechanics and engineering
- Heat and mass transfer
- Reservoir engineering
- Other porous media applications

The last day of the symposium will be dedicated to PhD students' presentations in a competition format, with prizes awarded for the best presentations. This initiative aims to promote research on porous media among young academics.

Join us in sharing expertise, research findings, and innovative ideas to address the challenges of porous media research and engineering for sustainable development.

ACCEPTED ABSTRACTS FOR PUBLICATION
Submitted abstracts will be reviewed by the Scientific Committee.
Assistance will be provided to the best contributions for submitting a full paper to InterPore Journal.

FEES
There is no fee to attend this symposium.
However, face-to-face participants in each country are invited to pay a contribution to cover coffee breaks and lunch during the event.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR ABSTRACTS SUBMISSION
The abstract should contain a brief and concise summary of what was done, how it was done, what the main outcomes were and what it adds to the field. Please also feel free to submit a graphical abstract should this help in conveying the message of your work.

Link for abstracts submission: https://events.interpore.org/event/57/

To submit an abstract, you need to be logged in with your Indico account. If you do not have an account yet, create one here.

If you experience trouble creating an account, please ensure that you have checked your spam/junk folders (for the confirmation email), and firewall protections, or contact WAIC_chapter@interpore.org or marcel.kebre@ujkz.bf or folorode@lsu.edu for assistance

The Abstract submission page has the following fields:
Title: Give title of your presentation.
Authors: List of authors, with one corresponding author. You must select one of the co-authors as Speaker (that name then cannot be moved to the co-author field). To do so click on the box marked "Speaker" beside the author you would like to designate as the speaker. When selected, the speaker button will turn blue. You can change the order of co-authors and/or the speaker role later on until the abstract submission deadline.
Content: Write or paste the Abstract of your presentation (300 words maximum excluding references).
Attachments: Should you wish to include an image in your abstract, please include them as .jpg or .png files, no larger than 300 KB.

The call for abstracts is closed.
